You Need Me

By Cydney Damo,

9 months postpartum. This is the real, raw image of my life 9 months into motherhood. No, my body didn’t “bounce back” and that’s ok. I probably eat more carbs than I should. I probably eat more sweets than I should. Most of the time I don’t eat breakfast and then sometimes I don’t eat lunch until 3pm and then eat supper at 7 but that’s ok. Sometimes I scarf my food down while my baby girl is sitting in my lap trying to slap the food out of my hand… and that’s ok. I promise you, despite what social media may tell you.. it’s not all “rainbows and butterflies” babies cry. babies scream. babies want YOU and sometimes ONLY YOU.

Breastfeeding Through the Night

When my baby was just a couple months old my pediatrician told me that he should be sleeping 10-12 hours a night without waking up. He didn’t sleep anywhere near that (and still doesn’t at 7.5 years old). So naturally I freaked out! I thought there was something wrong with him.

It’s Totally Normal If Your Baby Breastfeeds Every Hour (Or Even More Frequently Than That!)

Each latch felt like a puzzle I was desperately trying to figure out. I had to pump my milk for a while and feed him with a medicine dropper until we finally got into our groove.

Breastfeeding on Demand

Abby Theuring, The Badass Breastfeeder, breastfeeding on demand

Breastfeeding on demand means initiating breastfeeding whenever your baby gives hunger cues. An even easier way to think about this is to initiate breastfeeding whenever you can and often and allowing your baby to breastfeed for as long as they want. There is no need to watch the clock or breastfeed on any kind of schedule. Simply breastfeed as often as you can, whenever your baby asks for it and for as long as your baby wants. This is the best way to establish milk supply and the best way to make sure your baby is getting plenty of milk. You might be told to breastfeed every 2 hours or something like that, but there is no need to do thus and this could actually lead to milk supply issues. Simply breastfeed on demand.
