Babywearing is Badass: So Says the Science

Some people might regard babywearing as a mere fashion statement. Sure, they think, those fancy wraps look hip, but do they really serve any function?

According to the science, yes.

At one time, babywearing was standard practice among mothers everywhere. Its decline, especially in the West, led many to assume it was a dying habit. With International Babywearing Week upon us, however, advocates are standing up to say that wearing our babies is back and it’s here to stay. [Read more…]

Make Babywearing Mainstream

Discovering babywearing was an empowering event for me. While I was initially drawn to the beautiful patterns and variety of carriers, it was the freedom that babywearing leant that brought me fully into motherhood. I struggled with the transition to my new role as mom. None of my friends had children, I didn’t know anyone who was pregnant along with me; I was lonely. I would see moms hanging out together in the park, but I was alone with my baby. I loved the time with him and it was exciting to discover the world through his eyes, but there were times when I longed for some adult conversation. [Read more…]

Kangaroo Care Awareness

When my first son, Jack, was born I probably resembled the victim of a bar fight more than a mother. I was not physically or emotionally prepared for the birth and far less for the transition to motherhood. I was scared, scarred, isolated and uninformed. I worked at breastfeeding, but anything else that the nurses brought up I just brushed off. It hurts my mama heart now to think back to how little I knew despite how much I thought I knew. No one told me anything. Topics came up and were quickly dropped. I still wonder why no one pushed certain things with me. One of those topics being skin-to-skin contact. [Read more…]

Badass Baby Registry

As I prepare for the birth of my second child I have come to realize that there is really nothing at all that is the same as the first time around. Morning sickness, yeah, ok, that’s pretty much the same, but everything else is different. Everything. I think there are a couple of reasons for this. First, it’s the second time around. A Book Review of Sage Parenting: Where Nature Meets Nurture

Sage Parenting: Where Nature Meets Nurture by Rachel Rainbolt, MA could have drastically changed how I prepared for motherhood. When I became pregnant I read What to Expect When You’re Expecting like it was the holy bible for pregnant mothers. Each month I read the corresponding chapter about 12 times. I enjoyed reading about my baby. I didn’t know that there was a whole world of parenting books out there and when I gave birth to Jack, while I spent the whole pregnancy following his growth, I wasn’t at all prepared to be his mother. Jack Wearing: My Baby Wearing Story

It wasn’t an accident that I became to be called The Badass Breastfeeder. I have always had a reputation for being tough, cool and ornery. I never pass up an opportunity to flip someone off, tell a creepy dude at a bar to go fuck himself or put a coworker in their place when trying to manipulate me. As a social worker I have been known as a fierce advocate for my clients, not afraid to disagree with a lawyer or judge and I have executed many manual restraints with aggressive teenagers while wearing a pair of high heels. AP By Surprise: My Journey to Attachment Parenting

Before I gave birth to my son I read all the books; What to Expect When You’re Expecting, The Happiest Baby on the Block, Healthy Sleep Happy Baby. To be honest I’m not sure I am getting the names of these books correct because I threw them all out. But I’ll get to that in a minute. I was going to do this perfectly.
