The Year Breastfeeding Goes Mainstream

It’s happening. The exposure that women have given to their breastfeeding harassment is climaxing. Women have had enough of being verbally abused, called “disgusting,” and being kicked out of restaurants, doctors’ offices, court rooms, playrooms, public pools and stores. We are sick of being bullied by businesses, having photos deemed pornographic, being told that we should expect to be abused if we are going to do “that” in public/without a cover/near children/near husbands/past infancy/etc. Breastfeeders all over the world are shedding the cover and coming out of hiding. The world is feeling our power.

The fight for breastfeeding rights has taken a front seat in the feminist movement. We are rejecting the idea that we bring harassment on ourselves. We will no longer take the blame for other people’s actions and feelings based on how we choose to feed our children. We are busting the myth that women must follow ludicrous rules regarding our bodies. We hear the message loud and clear that our bodies do not belong to us and that this world is not ours; and we’re pissed. For every woman who is stepping out there are even more that continue to be harassed, pushed into silence, made afraid or stop breastfeeding altogether.

Breastfeeding in public will be mainstream. It will be. We won’t stop until it is. Until every woman who wishes to breastfeed can do so with the support she needs and the respect she deserves.

Everyone plays a role in flooding our culture with images, information, awareness and dialogue about breastfeeding. The breastfeeding mothers on the front lines, the lactation specialists spreading education, activists raising awareness, cyber moms posting brelfies, professional photographers creating art, media outlets providing fair and balanced news coverage, moms organizing in protest. Now businesses are beginning to follow suit.
