A Review of Motherlove Green Salve

By Abby Theuring, MSW

I would love to have a suitcase designated just for hygiene products. I’d bring my various face creams, body washes, lotions, hair serums, coconut oil, olive oil and exfoliates every time I went out of town. Which is often. I’d bring my Motherlove products for the kids; the diaper rash and thrush and the birth and baby oil that I use to rub up the baby. By the time everything is packed I have no room for diapers and I’m only going on a weekender to the grandparent’s house an hour away. Something’s gotta give.

I got smart and put a jar of Green Salve in the suitcase and took out what it can replace. It was practically the only thing left in there. I use it on my lips, my body, my bikini wax, even my face. I use it on my kids’ butts, cradle cap and any weird kid things that arise. I also use it for bites, burns, itches and rashes. Recently we were at a photo shoot in the woods on a 90 degree Chicago evening. The next day we were covered in mosquito bites and we were scratching our skin away. The Green Salve saved our sanity and our skin.

My oldest son has inherited my sensitive skin mixed with the pasty white Jewish skin from his dad. Heat, moisture, cold, dryness, it all causes skin irritation for us. We can’t win. Every season it’s something, but come winter we struggle daily to remain comfortable. When I was pregnant with my second son I kept a pasta server in the pocket of my chair. I scratched my arms and back until they were swollen. In the summer months my arms pits break out in a heat rash. I’ve tried shaving, not shaving, powders and creams. It got to a point where I skipped the deodorant and just applied cortisone cream. Green Salve eases the outbreaks and stops the itching so that I stop furthering the damage.

I don’t question the products at Motherlove because I trust them. I am so over the marketing ploys by many companies that claim things are natural and safe but turn out to be toxic and gross. The ingredients in Green Salve are all 100% certified organic, safe for me and safe for my kids.

Green Salve is made up of extra virgin olive oil, beeswax (not honey), plantain herb, comfrey herb, marshmallow root and calendula flower. And as promised, all certified organic; non-GMO, free of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, nuclear radiation and animal drugs. Yeah, all that is in many products out there marketed as safe for you and your kids. Green Salve has a zero rating by the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep Database. Green Salve is also gluten free.

It should be noted that Green Salve is, in part, so awesome because it has comfrey, one of the best herbs for reducing skin inflammation. But, comfrey isn’t safe when used internally, so if you are breastfeeding and need nipple care, use Nipple Cream or Diaper Rash & Thrush salve, which are safe to be used prior to nursing or pumping – no need to even wipe off!

I have learned to travel light. Now I always have room left over and need to shove another pair of heels in there to keep everything from slipping around. That’s my excuse for the extra shoes anyway. I can’t say enough about Motherlove as a company and all the products that they make, but if you can only buy one then get yourself a jar of Green Salve!
